El Matarranya on Mountain Bike

All routes offer similar characteristics:

  • Lowest Point : 330m

  • Effort required: Meduim
  • Water points: Although the stream are clear, recently there have been complaints of of spillage of animal sewage and therefore it is advisable to acquire water in the villages
 

 

 

Calaceit

Calaceit - Massalió (10Km)
The village of Massalió is rich in archaeological remains. Near the Piuró del Barranc Fondo there are small cave paintings, although they are much the worse for wear.
Behind the Hermitage of Sant Cristòfol are the remains of a hallstàttic village of the same name. It seems the village dates from the transition period between the first and second Iron Ages.

Church of  Santa María la Major Massalió

Noble Buildings: The church of Santa María la Major dates from the end of the XIVth Century. The central nave is Gothic. The more recent facade, is renaissance . Close by the church is a tower which looks as if it were part of an ancient castle.
Around the church are many picturesque streets and an abundance of houses built of quarried stone and which belonged to the old nobility.

Massalió

 

Town Hall, Massalió

The old Casa de los Diezmos, (Tithe House) is worthy of mention with its bishop's shield on the facade. Inside, are three enormous oil mill wheels of quarried stone dating from the XVIth Century.
The XVIth Century town hall is has magnificent arches on the ground floor.

Calaceit - Maella (20Km)

The lower floors of the Town Hall date from the XIth and XIIth Centuries and are in Romanic style. The rest of the building is Mudéjar.
In the Calle Major (Main Street) you can see the old Lonja (Corn Exchange) with its arches and 3 shields. The Clock Tower (torre del Relotge), was begun in the XIIth Century and its first section is square, the rest in Mudéjar style is from the XVIth Century.
The parish church also shows two styles, the central nave is Romanic and the lateral halls are Gothic..

Town Gates at  Arenys de Lledó

 

Calaceit - Arenys de Lledó

The parish church of Arenys de Lledó was built in the XVIth Century in the Gothic style. The arches of the city gates, remains of the ancient defence walls of the town can still be seen.(XVIIIth Century).
To the west of the town id the ravine of Vallrovira where there are several cave paintings. One of these shows a human sacrifice and is unique.
The best route to the ravine is to take the Sant Hipólit road from Calaceit.

Calaceit - Arenys de Lledó- Caseres - Calaceit (30Km)

Caseres is a Catalan town by the River Matarranya.
Its church has an arched doorway protected by a serrated sill. Built in the gothic style it dates from the XVIth Century, though the central nave is Romanic. By the church there are many beautiful quarried stone buildings and arched streets.

Queretes


Vall de Roures
, was declared a historical and artistic monument, and it's worth a visit to see the levantine gothic church of Santa María la Major, the castle, declared a national monument and the town hall in the aragonese renaissance style and reproduced in the Pueblo Español at Barcelona.

Queretes
is a very interesting village and has many noble buildings and arched streets. You can see what, in other times was the village oil mill and is now a bakery. Within the village boundary are the ruins of several iberian vullages.
